A Special Interview with Prof. Salvatore Gruttadauria, Chairman of Treatment and the Study of Abdominal Diseases and Abdominal Transplantation at IRCCS-ISMETT-UPMC Italy

On Dec 5, 2022, the Editorial Office of Hepatoma Research was delighted to have a special interview with Prof. Salvatore Gruttadauria, Associate Editor of Hepatoma Research, Chairman of Treatment and the Study of Abdominal Diseases and Abdominal Transplantation, Palermo, Italy. As the interviewer, Prof. Georgios Tsoulfas, Editorial Board member of Hepatoma Research, the World President of the International College of Surgeons and Vice Chair of the International Relations Committee of the Chairman of the American College of Surgeons, had an in-depth exchange and interaction with Prof. Gruttadauria.

Biography of the Interviewee

Salvatore Gruttadauria is the Chairman of Treatment and the Study of Abdominal Diseases and Abdominal Transplantation at IRCCS-ISMETT-UPMC Italy in Palermo, Italy. He also served as Research and Clinical Fellow, Visiting Professor of Surgery, Instructor of Surgery and Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Dr. Gruttadauria has performed more than 6,000 major surgical procedures (446 laparoscopically). He has performed more than 864 abdominal organ transplants and more than 892 liver resections.

In the exclusive interview, Prof. Gruttadauria talked about the origin, development and role of ISMETT Center in collaboration between American and European centers. Furthermore, Prof. Gruttadauria introduced the current status of liver transplantation in Italy. Referring to the gap between regions in terms of rate of liver donation in Italy, Prof. Gruttadauria admitted that there is a big gap in the North of the county compared to the region of the South; however, the culture of the donation is growing. Besides, Prof. Gruttadauria and Prof. Tsoulfas exchanged their novel insights on the role of minimally invasive surgery in clinical programs. Finally, he shared his future interest area in the indication of transplant oncology.

Q1. Can you tell us about the ISMETT Center, its origins and how it has developed over time, and what are you looking for in its role in the future?

Q2. What is the status of liver transplantation in Italy? In Europe? Is there a major shift towards living donors in liver transplantation?

Q3. What do you consider the role of minimally invasive liver surgery? Is it going to "take over" liver transplantation or are there limits?

Q4. Which research areas in liver transplantation do you consider particularly interesting?
