New submissions are initially assessed by the Managing Editor for originality, suitability, structure and formatting, conflicts of interest, and background of authors, etc. Poorly-prepared manuscripts may be rejected at this stage. Then manuscripts are assigned to a science editor, who is an Editor-in-Chief, an Associate Editor, an Editorial Board Member or a Guest Editor, for an evaluation regarding the novelty, scientific soundness, and ethical issues, etc. Qualified manuscripts are passed on to experts for peer-review.
All manuscripts accepted by the journal would undergo rigorous and thorough single-blind peer review, which means that reviewers know the names of authors, but the names of the reviewers are hidden from the authors. At least two review reports are to be collected for each submission. More details of peer review are available at Peer Review Guidelines.
Authors are required to submit the revised manuscript within one week if minor revision is recommended while two weeks if major revision recommended. The revised manuscript may or may not be sent to reviewers, depending on whether the reviewers requested to check the revised version or not.
Science editors would be invited to make decisions on manuscripts at different stages of editorial process, such as in initial check, in the assessment after peer-review and revision. After full consideration of manuscripts, review comments and authors' response, science editors recommend Acceptance, Minor/Major Revision, or Rejection for the further editorial handling.
Once a manuscript is acceptable, a letter of the official acceptance will be sent to authors.
Each accepted manuscript is subject to production, including language editing, copy editing and format conversion, etc. Language editing is carried out by native English-speaking editors. In some cases where extensive language editing is required, we charge authors an additional fee (with authors’ prior approval). Before publication, authors are provided a PDF version of their manuscripts for proofreading, where major changes are not allowed.
OAE Editorial Process
If authors do not agree with any decision made in editorial handling, they may submit a formal appeal to the Editorial Office, providing detailed reasons for the appeal and point-by-point responses to the reviewers' and/or editors’ comments. The case will be dealt with in a timely manner.
