Published on: 4 Feb 2018 Viewed: 2086

Since its inauguration in April 2015, Hepatoma Research (HR) has constantly adhered to the concept of high quality publishing and has continued to develop. It has made numerous advancements in 2017 and gained recognition from more experts in the field of liver cancer research. The world has heard our voice.

In February 2017, Prof. Masao Omata, emeritus Professor of the University of Tokyo, Japan, was invited to serve as Honorary Editor-in-Chief of HR; in April 2017, Prof. Guang-wen Cao from the Second Military Medical University assumed the position of the second chief editor of HR, and subsequently reorganized the editorial board; in July 2017, the second Editorial Board meeting was held in Rongcheng City, Shandong Province, China; in September 2017, the HR editorial staff attended the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA) meeting held in Seoul, South Korea, and introduced the journal to many famous liver cancer experts; in November 2017, the third Editorial Board meeting was held successfully in Nanning City, Guangxi Province, China, and attended by Honorary Editor-in-Chief Prof. Omata.

Under the guidance of the editorial committee led by Prof. Guang-wen Cao, and with the strong support of authors and reviewers, HR conducted stricter control over the manuscript quality in 2017 in the principle of "fewer but better". A total of 38 articles were published online in 2017, most of which were research articles and reviews. The majority of authors were from China, United States, Japan and other countries/regions. At the same time, the total numbers of single page views and downloads were much higher than those of 2016, and the number of published articles decreased by 14 compared to 52 in 2016.

With the selection of high-quality manuscripts, readers of HR in 2017 were distributed in more than 168 countries and regions around the world, significantly increased compared with those in 2016. Among them, five of the published manuscripts received extensive attention from readers.

In order to provide authors with a better submission experience and make publishing more efficient, HR  effectively rectified many issues in 2017. The overall average manuscript processing speed in 2017 got greatly improved compared to 2016. The publishing turnaround time was shortened by more than two months. In August, the website underwent a periodical optimization; in September, the world’s most widely used Editorial Manager® system for manuscript processing was adopted; in December, reforms such as the optimization typographic layout of the article were carried out, etc.

The progress of HR has also drawn the interest of a wider circle of well-known experts to serve as guest editors of HR special issues. In 2017, HR launched 5 special issues covering all areas of liver cancer research. We highly appreciate the support of the special issue editors, and believe that with the successful publication of these special issues in 2018, HR will make more remarkable progress!

As a Chinese saying goes: "A nine-story terrace starts with a basket of earth", being a responsible partner for the authors, and readers, HR is committed to the progress of liver cancer research and development. We are very grateful to all the editors, readers and authors who have greatly supported the development of the journal in the past year. In 2018, HR will make still further and greater progress on publishing high-quality manuscripts, expanding the scope of promotion, and improving the manuscript processing speed.
